10 FCT healthcare workers bag awards for service to humanity on Public Service Day

Ten healthcare professionals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCTBwari )’s and Gwagwalada Area Councils have received awards for their outstanding humanitarian service.

The Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation in Abuja organised the award ceremony in collaboration with an NGO called the Heroic Discovery and Community Development centre (HEDCODEC).

The award presentation was one of many events held in honour of United Nations Public Service Day.

The goal of the award was to recognise and support the most outstanding healthcare front-line workers who have shown and attained outstanding excellence in their line of work.

Speaking, Dr. Aminu Magashi, the Chairman of the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation and the Coordinator of the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN), said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us so many things.

“I had the opportunity to walk around during the lock down to observe what was going on. We observed the excellent work being done by health professionals at the facility level. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the health professionals have been exposed to a lot of risk.

“At first, there was no personal protective equipment (PPE), and many people used whatever they could find to protect themselves. Gradually, however, assistance from the government and development partners began to flow in.

“The COVID-19 has altered the way we think so that we now recognise the importance of the health professionals working in facilities.

“Everything a minister, commissioner, or other government appointee can do to guarantee the proper care of the health workers should be done.”

Speaking about the motivation behind the award, Dr. Magashi revealed that although HEDCODEC management had pencilled him in for the honour, he ultimately decided that front-line healthcare workers at the facility should be honoured and encouraged for their dedication to helping people.

The following step, according to Dr. Magashi, will be the inclusion of all six area councils by the end of the following year. “We started with Gwagwalada and Bwari Area Councils,” he said.

He urged well-intentioned Nigerians and philanthropists in every region of the nation to adopt the concept and honour local front-line healthcare providers.

The Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation was praised earlier by a representative of HEDCODEC, Kabir Abddulsalam, for funding the award ceremony.

He said: “Our organisation had previously planned to honour Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba for his outstanding work in the humanitarian sector as one of its main goals.

“The two organisations later redesigned this to become a sustainable mechanism for rewarding outstanding front-line Nigerian health workers who have shown and achieved great excellence in their line of work within Bwari, Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja.”

Onah Michael, a mental health nurse at the clinic in the Gwagwalada township, responded on behalf of the awardees. She thanked the award’s organisers for the honour and said they would continue to do more for the benefit of humanity.

He emphasised, “We are in the health department not by accident, therefore, we are ready to pay any price for humanity.

Michael further urged the award’s sponsors to keep it going to support the expansion of the Nigerian health industry.

A variety of the awardees our correspondent spoke with expressed gratitude to the organisers and promised to step up their work where they were assigned.

Each recipient of an award received a plaque, a certificate, and some money.
