NCC clarifies the term “renewal” of an MTN license

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has denied claims that it had extended MTN’s Unified Access and Service License (UASL) for another ten years.

Remember that the firm was awarded UASL for another 10 years by the FG to operate its business in Nigeria, according to a media outlet other than DAILY POST.

The commission, in a statement released by its Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, responded to the story by saying that, while the telecom business has applied for a license renewal, it has yet to be granted.

“The attention of the Nigerian Communications Commission has been drawn to a publication in an online media entitled “Govt renews MTN Nigeria license amid 20 years of GSM phones” to the effect that the Commission has renewed MTN’s mobile operating license for another ten years,” according to the statement.

“MTN Nigeria, the nation’s largest mobile network operator (MNO), has secured regulatory approval of the renewal of its operating license for another 10 years with effect from September 1, 2021,” according to the online publication, which cited regulatory filings by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) as its source.

“The Commission wishes to clarify that, while MTN Nigeria has applied for the renewal of the Commission’s Unified Access and Service (UASL) License, the application has yet to be accepted since it is currently through regulatory processes.

“We are issuing this announcement for the benefit of our broad stakeholders.”
