In the past few months, Lagos State has recorded three incidents of building collapse in Yaba, Ebute-Metta, and Okota, resulting in 15 deaths.

On November 1, 2021, it was reported that a 21-story building on Gerard Road in Ikoyi collapsed. Approximately fifty people perished in the building’s collapse.
Additionally, on May 1, 2022, a three-story building collapsed in the Ebute Metta region of the state, resulting in the deaths of at least ten people.
After the collapse, the Lagos State Government immediately halted approvals for buildings with more than three stories in Ebute-Metta East and West.

“The soil and topography, the low water level and its effects, and the inability of structures in this area to support loads above three stories were taken into account in reaching this conclusion,” Salako said.

“The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority has been instructed to cease accepting applications for approval of structures with more than three stories in the area.”
