A 30-year-old man who was allegedly caught raping a 75-year-old woman has been detained by police in Anambra State.
According to reports, the incident took place on farmland in Nkwelle Awkuzu, in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, a spokesperson for the state police command, said in a press release that the woman had raised an alarm to alert bystanders, which led to the suspect’s capture and later rescue from lynching by police officers.
In the press release, Ikenga stated: “Anambra State Operatives working with Security agents at around 4 pm on June 24, 2022, rescued one Sunday Nwadiagba “M” from Eyiba, Ebonyi State, who was accused of raping a 75-year-old woman who lived in Nkwelle Awkuzu from mob action.
According to preliminary information, the suspect was apprehended by the victim at the farm before neighbours and bystanders were alerted by the elderly woman’s screams.
Before his arrest, an angry mob had already beaten him until he was unconscious, and both the victim and the suspect had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
He cited CP Echeng Echeng, the state’s commissioner of police, who denounced the mob’s decision to attack the suspect.
“Whenever they are apprehended, they should try to take such a suspect to the nearest police station. The police would then have the chance to investigate the suspects’ criminal behaviour appropriately and prosecute them in accordance with the law, the commissioner was quoted as saying.
