Victor Osimhen’s goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Sierra Leone in the African Cup of Nations qualifier in Abuja on Thursday was widely praised by Nigerians on social media.
Jose Peseiro’s first win since taking over as Eagles coach in May after losing his first two games in charge to Mexico and Ecuador in friendlies in the United States.
The Eagles hadn’t won since January before their victory over the Leone Stars.
When Osimhen netted the winning goal for the first time in a long time, Twitter erupted with joyous adulation for the team’s fans.
Ayomikun Elemikan wrote, “You can see the zeal in Victor Osimhen whenever he’s on the pitch. Energized and always a threat. Highest ranked player”
‘Star Boy’ of the show. “It’s Victor Osimhen doing his magic again.”
@SmartAtuadi, another Twitter user, wrote: “Both Iwobi and Osimhen goals were powerful goals. Victor Osimhen is a ferocious monster. The way he attacked that header is what has the majority of Premier League teams scurrying to sign him. When it comes to attacking the net, his predatory instincts are at the top of their game.”
“You can question many things about Victor Osimhen’s style of play, but you cannot question his instinct of being at the right place at the right time,” wrote Babajide James. That positional awareness does almost 70% of his striking job for him. This is yet another brilliant finish by the lanky guy.”
It was Osimhen’s 11th goal for the Eagles in all competitions.
As of Monday, the Eagles will be travelling to Morocco to face Sao Tome and Principe.
